Pace conversion chart

Race entries, pace bands, watches and training plans rarely agree on which unit to use, so the chart below covers the range most runners live in — 6:00 to 12:00 per mile in 15-second steps. The quick mental shortcut: your per-kilometer pace is roughly your per-mile pace × 0.62, so 8:00/mi works out to about 4:58/km. The 5K, 10K, half and marathon columns show what each pace delivers if you hold it perfectly evenly from gun to tape. Real races rarely cooperate with that assumption, which is why an effort-based model like our VDOT calculator usually predicts race times better than straight-line arithmetic — and if you're wondering what pace you should be running in training, that's a different question again: see training paces.

FAQ

Multiply by 0.62. A mile is 1.609 km, so every minute per mile is worth about 37 seconds per kilometer. In practice: turn the pace into seconds, take roughly 60% and add a touch. An 8:00 mile is 480 seconds; 480 × 0.62 ≈ 298 seconds, which is 4:58 per kilometer — exactly what the chart above shows. Going the other way, multiply the per-km pace by 1.61.

From the chart: 9:00 per mile (5:36 per km) brings you home in 1:57:59, while 9:15 per mile already slips to 2:01:16. So breaking 2:00 means holding 9:00 miles for the full 13.1 — ideally banking the two-minute buffer the chart shows rather than cutting it fine. For your exact target, type 1:59:59 into the goal-time calculator above and it will give you the precise pace in both units.

The finish-time columns assume you run every split identically and cover exactly the certified distance. Real races add tangent error (your GPS usually logs longer than the certified course), hills, weather, crowding at the start, and the late-race fade. Even well-executed races tend to cover a little extra ground, so finishing a few seconds per mile slower than your watch's average pace target is normal. Treat the chart as the arithmetic floor and leave yourself a small buffer.

No. Converting between min/mi and min/km is pure unit math — 8:00 per mile is 4:58 per kilometer at sea level, at altitude, and in a heat wave. What changes with conditions is which pace is appropriate for a given session, and that's a physiology question rather than an arithmetic one — that's what the training paces tool is for.
